Utility

Utilities MarketThe electric industry is poised to make the transformation from a centralized, producer-controlled network to one that is less centralized and more consumer-interactive. An automated, widely distributed energy delivery network, the Smart Grid will be characterized by a two-way flow of electricity and information and will be capable of monitoring everything from power plants to customer preferences to individual appliances. It incorporates into the grid the benefits of distributed computing and communications to deliver real-time information and enable the near-instantaneous balance of supply and demand at the device level.

Utilities — A Closer Look

The move is on, and it is clear that Smart Grid technology is driving our utility infrastructure to become a leaner, meaner power management machine. At the forefront of Smart Grid are Automated Meter Reading (AMR) and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) which allow for utilities to balance real-time grid demands with supply efficiencies, eliminating costly waste. Technological solutions such as SCADA, Telemetry, Flow Monitoring, and Natural Gas Automation, are found throughout the Utility market and are expected to be expanded and retrofitted with smarter solutions.

Collection sites are pivotal in the deployment of any Smart Grid system as millions of residential and commercial meters will need to be constantly connected and monitored. Typical collection sites are utility pole mounted cabinets containing communications equipment for gathering meter data and back hauling to towers or existing utility communications structures.

Typical Applications

  • SmartGrid Collector Sites
  • Distribution Automation
  • Distributed Generation
  • Remote Monitoring

In order to roll out this technology, the infrastructure must include smart meters, collector site locations, and backhaul sites.

There are three typical requirements for a typical AMR/AMI collector site:

  • Reliable AC or DC power paired to the deployed radio equipment.
  • Weatherproof, controlled enclosure space for sensitive devices.
  • Battery backup that provides several hours of runtime in the event of a power outage.

Existing LinkUPS solutions offer outdoor power systems capable of protecting and powering a multitude of customer equipment. The new Link UPS outdoor backup power system is specifically designed to provide both primary and uninterrupted, reliable standby power in harsh environmental applications where AC power is available. Ventev's radio ready outdoor power systems are pre-engineered and pre-sized for easy product selection while the durable NEMA 4X weatherproof enclosures have ample room for "CLICK-IN" installation of radio gear and control equipment on pre-installed DIN rails and pre-drilled brackets.
